Our Newest Addition(s)!!

Hello there all!! I want to introduce you to our newest addition(s) to our family.

On your left is our little girl named "Lillie", and on your right is our little runt male named "Copper". They are 3 weeks old and will be ready to come home with us in about 3 more weeks!

I was going to adopt just one but..just like potato chips... I couldn't have just one, so ... I chose BOTH!!

This is the mama. Her name is "Susie Q"

And this is the daddy. His name is "Cooper"

When we lost "Goober" in March and adopted "Dodger", then lost "Buster" in July, I just couldn't bare to not have another Basset. A friend of mine's aunts male and female Bassets just had a litter of puppies and told me about them. I just couldn't resist so I went to look at them. I FELL IN LUUUUVVVV!!! It was such a tough decision, I decided to take the two I fell in love with the moment I saw them.

Now, we have a 4 year old Basset Hound named "Dodger", and my husband just adopted a Husky/Malamute pup that is about 7 weeks old. I was just gonna get one of the basset pups but I just could not help myself. They are soooooo cute!!!!

I CAN'T WAIT TO BRING THEM HOME!!!

Hi! Welcome to my page of www.nourishyourpets.blogspot.com. If you are like me and have a tremendous passion for animals...then we share a common interest. I hope that this site will give you joy and insight to a mutual feeling of compassion and love for those little ( and big) critters that seem to slide right into our hearts at first sight.

I have ALWAYS loved animals my whole life. I can't remember NOT having a pet. They are a way of life for me. One of my strong passions I have had for a long time is to open up a unique and all natural pet supply store. I financially can not do it right now so this is my way of letting you readers out there know that my goal is to at least start up an online store in the near future. It will most likely be called something like "Nature's Unique Care Pet Supplies" or something totally different. I don't know quite yet what to do or how to go about it. If any of you out there know ANYTHING on how to do this PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!! LOL! It has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember but just haven't had the know how to do it! PLEASE HELP!
Anyway, my little boy came up with the name http://www.nourishyourpets.blogspot.com/. He also has a huge passion for animals. He has the softest heart, we have been so blessed with him.

Do Cats Always Land On Their Feet??

Not Always... but they sure try. Cats are the perfect small predator, just as comfortable stalking a squirrel from tree to tree as they are chasing a wiggly piece of ribbon across the carpet. The evolved with some nifty high-rise survival skills, including the ability to grab onto a branch with retractable crampons if they lose their footing. And if that doesn't work, they have that awe-inspiring ability to right themselves in midair so they can stick a perfect four-point landing.

This nifty feat would put any Olympic gymnast to shame. A falling cat will instinctiely try to right himself from head to tail, first rotating his head into the proper position ( to spot the ground just like all those crazy acrobats do on the X Games whether they're on skis, snowboards, bikes or skateboards) and then sequentially spiraling the rest of his body so all his feet are oriented to the ground. As the body gains the right position, the cat will spread his legs in a sort of flying-squirrel fashion and relax his muscles in anticipation of landing. Spreading the impact over four points is considerably better than hitting on one, and a cat's cusshy joints enable him to absorb a lot more impact than we mere humans can.

A cat's ability to rotate in midair isn't a fool-proof strategy for surviving the perils of modern living, however Veterinarians have along noted and studied what's called high-rise syndrome--the tendency cats have of being better able to survive falls from greater heights than lower ones. The most dangerous falls are from between two and six stories. Amazingly enough, a few urban cats have survived falls of up to thirty stories, allbeit with sever injuries---broken legs and jaws, and collapsed lungs.

The difference may well be the cat''s ablility to set himself up for the best possible landing, in the way that all cats having b een doing for generations. You see, that "rotate and relax" maneuver takes time to implement. From the lower floors, it's thought a cat hasn't enough time to prepare himself for impact by getting himself in time to prepare himself for impact by geting himself in proper landing position. From the highest floors, the fall's too great to survive. In between, however, is a margin of survivablilit for hte cat who lands on his feet.

Urban veterinarians say they start seeing cats who've fallen out of windows and off balconies in the spring, when people are anxious to enjoy the nice weather and open their windows. Cats aren't stupid, but it's really not in their nature to understand the implications of being twenty stories up. They don't think about it, and go about their business as always. Some cats simply lose their footing walking on a narrow balcony railing, while others jump after a moving abject such as a bird. Hudereds of cats are killed or injured each year in falls.

It's best not to test a cat's ablility to land on his feet. The answer is an easy one: By screens! That way, the cat can't
get out easily and the bugs can't get in. 01/13/08

The Healing Power Of Feline Feces?

Yes, the ancient Romans believed feline feces had healing powers. But they also thought drinking cups made of lead were a great idea, so the resulting brain damage may help explain it somewhat.

The Romans used a concoction of honey, cat dung, spices and fat to heal burns and wounds. (Just imagine how that smelled!)

Many cultures have used almost everything in, on or from cats in medicine. Even today, tiger parts are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat all sorts of ailments. As a result, there are only fifty South China tigers left.

As late as the Middle Ages, a few medicinal concoctions still called for cat poop. One mixed white wine with cat dung to treat dizziness, fever or seizures. An ointment made of cat scat was used both to treat baldness and as a depilatory.

...Never thought that can poop can be so useful!!

Are You Kidding? Cats are still worshipped. Just ask them!

Historically speaking, though, cats have figured prominently in the religions of Egypt, the Norse countries, and various parts of Asia. The Egyptians worshipped a goddess named Bast with the body of a woman and the head of a cat. Thousands of cat mummies have been discovered in Egypt, and ancient Egyptians even shaved their eyebrows in mourning when the family cat died.

In Siam (today's Thailand), the cat was so revered that a cat always rode in a chariot at the head of a parade celebrating the new king.

In Norse mythology, Freya, the most renowned and desirable of the goddesses, traveled around in a chariot pulled by cats.

Which is not to say cats were considered such a good thing everywhere and all the time. In the Middle Ages, cats were thought to be linked to the devil, and many innocent cats were killed along with those people likewise thought to have connections to demons and witchcraft.

In the end, though, cats proved their worth and gained plenty of followers. Having turned from mouser to moocher, few cats these days are expected to earn their keep, and yet we keep them anyway. To be born retired: What is that?? 2-09-08

A cat's whiskers are deep-set, hypersensitive modified hairs caled vibrissae (great Scrabble word!) that help kitty find her way in the world. How sensitive? A cat's whiskers can detect small changes in air currents. They are an important sense organ, so keep cats away from open flames that may light the whiskers up like a sparkler and keep your junior barber-to-be away from the cat.

The spread of a cat's whiskers helps her gauge how much room she needs to fit through a narrow opening at a trot in very low light. Of course, this isn't foolproof: When a cat gains weight, her whiskers don't get longer so her head may clear but her body may get stuck.

Your cat's whiskers can also help clue you in on what she's thinking. When the whiskers are forward, a cat is in a friendly or curious mood. When the whiskers are pinned back, look out!

When your cat's whiskers are moving during a nap, you can tell she has entered the deepest kind of sleep, which is accompanied by rapid eye movements--and probably, dreams. 1-25-08
